500 Chemicals vs. Essential Oils
by Kara Battinelli
Have you heard the fuss about essential oils? If so, are you feeling like I did? "Oh boy, another multi-level marketing company trying to sell me something I don't need." But are essential oils as great as they say? Read on to find out what I've discovered.
This may seem off-topic, but it's not, I promise!
On average, women use over 500 different chemicals on their bodies on a daily basis. "Phhsssttt," I said. "The FDA approves these products for our use! It's all perfectly safe." Terrifyingly, the FDA doesn't require any testing or approval before releasing beauty products for our use. The FDA doesn't even require that cosmetic companies disclose their ingredients to the FDA before they hit the shelves. The United States only bans or restricts 11 chemicals from cosmetics where Europe has banned 1,328 chemicals from cosmetics - chemicals that are known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutation, reproductive harm, or birth defects. In fact, FDA regulations have not changed since the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act was put into action in 1938. If there happens to be an issue, whether short term like an allergy or long term like cancer, only then will a company pull the product. Until that happens, we are human trials for these products.
"How much of these products does it take to REALLY affect me? I mean, come on. I'm not drinking my lotion." Our bodies absorb 60% of what we put on our skin. I don't know about you, but I don't want 60% of 500 chemicals anywhere on my body, especially without knowing what it's actually doing to me because there is zero regulation as to what is in the product to begin with.
Cancer & Metals
My husband was diagnosed with cancer at way too young of an age. He was a first responder for 9/11 and got bladder cancer ten years later. Ingesting metals is a known cause of bladder cancer. Think of all the metals breathed in and adsorbed by the skin by first responders at 9/11. Research by the University of California, Berkeley found that lipsticks can contain as many as nine different metals. If used twice a day, lipstick can have more than 20% of a person's acceptable daily intake for aluminium, cadmium, and manganese. Some exceeded the acceptable daily intake for chromium, a metal that has been linked to stomach tumors. Ingesting metals is scary and unacceptable as an ingredient in our cosmetics. My husband was put into a situation where he couldn’t avoid ingesting metals. We aren’t in that situation.
“But I can buy the product off the shelf at Target! But it's normal! They're big companies - they must know! But the FDA!” It's unfortunately much cheaper to buy barrels of chemicals than it is to source organic, natural products that still work.
I'll admit that I chose Young Living through the haze of cancer-panic BUT I'm proud to say I chose correctly and haven't had one single regret. Yes, they are a multi-level marketing company. BUT do they work?
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. They are extracted by resin tapping directly from a tree, cold pressing citrus rinds, and steam distillation of a plant’s root, stem, leaves, or flower petals. Because of how they’re extracted, the benefits found in essential oils are much more powerful and targeted than the plants they come from.
When essential oils are applied to human skin, they carry the same life force as they do for the plant. They carry a high concentration of oxygen and produce the highest level of oxygenating molecules of any substance on Earth. They are at least 50 times more therapeutically potent than the plant itself or herbs made from the plant because of the way they are extracted.
Essential oils are also soluble with the lipids in the cell membrane therefore can go through the cellular wall because of their small molecular size. They are found in the bloodstream in 26 seconds when applied topically, and it takes two to three minutes to affect every cell in the body. Oils are metabolized within two to three hours so apply often!
Essential oils have been used for health since 4500 BC. Beat that, chemicals.
It’s never too late to fix it.
